How to stop discord from opening up on startup in Windows 10

There are plenty of different messaging apps and programs we have on our computers today. One of the most popular ones is Discord, where plenty of different people manage their own private and public chatrooms about a lot of different topics. And the reason why Discord is becoming more popular in different groups of people is that it offers more anonymity and privacy on the part of the user.

As good as Discord might be for different topics and for discussion about anything and everything with random people that you may or may not know personally, it can be quite irritating when the discussions never stop.

And you simply want to focus on work or enjoy your leisure time with your Windows 10 computer. And the worst part is that the default setting of Discord is that it opens right away the moment you boot up your Windows 10 PC.

Now, this can be a good thing for those who enjoy spending a lot of time on Discord or for those who would like to use Discord the moment they open their computers.

However, this may not be the most convenient for those who would want to do other things on their computers. It might even be irritating if you just simply want to boot your Windows 10 computer to watch movies, play games, or do something productive.

In that regard, if you want to actually prevent Discord from automatically starting up for one reason or another, it is possible for you to do so.

Here are some ways that you can use to disable Discord’s from automatically starting up when you boot up your Windows 10 computer:

Luckily, it is actually possible for you to use the Discord app to stop it from auto launching when you start up your computer. Here is how you do it:

  2. Look for the cogwheel icon. It should be located at the bottom left of the screen just beside your Discord username. Clicking on this icon will open the Discord User Settings window.

  4. The first option you will see when you open the Windows Settings window is the System Startup Behavior. Clicking on it will change it into a gray X bar, which means that Discord will no longer automatically open when you boot up your Windows 10 computer.

How do I disable Discord updates?

While Discord is one of the messaging apps that people tend to use whenever they want to stay anonymous and private and because it simply is just a great app, it does have a few problems in the sense that the app just does what it wants to do.

As we have discussed, one of the things that tend to irritate people is the fact that Discord automatically starts up when you boot your Windows 10 PC up.

Another thing is that Discord automatically updates, which can be annoying because it will prompt you to restart your computer at a time when you may not want to restart it.

Of course, when Discord is downloading updates, it can dreadfully slow down your internet connection at a time when you may want it to be working at its fastest.

In that case, how can you stop Discord from automatically updating?

So, before anything else, one of the features that Discord has is that its auto-update feature is built into it as the app itself was designed to automatically update without giving you the in-app option to choose whether or not you want it to automatically update. Essentially, Discord will update whenever it wants and needs to update.

The only option you have is when Discord is actually open such as when you are using it. During this time, Discord won’t automatically update unless you press the download icon at the top.

So, if you want to stop it from automatically update, we suggest that you keep your Discord app open.

There is another option that may be a bit trickier to do and has its downsides as well. On your Windows 10 PC, go toC:\Users\[User-name]\AppData\Local\Discord.

Find the Update.exe file and right-click on it to set the file to “read-only”. Doing so will prevent Discord from automatically update as you have essentially disabled the app from editing the Update.exe file.

The downside here, however, is that you can’t also choose to update Discord if you want it to. So, if you want to update your Discord app, you have to reverse the process all over again by de-selecting the “read-only” option on the Update.exe file.

Aside from that, there is no way for you to actually prevent Discord from automatically updating.

It can be annoying from time to time but it’s a feature that was built-in to make sure that you are always using the most up-to-date version of the Discord app.
