The 1440×900 screen resolution is one of the most commonly used desktop screen resolutions across the globe. This resolution is higher than HD, which is 720, but below full HD. What that means is that; with the 1440×900 resolution, you can always play 720p videos but will struggle with 1080p videos.

How many inches is 1440 x 900 resolution?

Before going ahead to address this issue, let me start by talking about what diagonal or screen sizes mean and exactly how to calculate them. I’m starting with that because it’ll help us when calculating the screen inches of a 1440 x 900 resolution.

That said, for you to understand what the diagonal size of any screen resolution is, you need information regarding the width and height of the screen. The screen size is usually calculated in inches and is way different from screen resolution, which is usually measured in pixels.

Here are some benefits of knowing the screen size

Like the screen resolutions of every laptop and computer, screen sizes also play an important part. You need to know the screen size of a particular monitor, as it’s important to productivity.

Apart from that, another significant benefit of knowing the screen size of a computer or laptop is that it helps, especially with buying a screen filter. That said, let’s have a quick look at how to perfectly calculate and understand the screen size of your monitor below:

Here’s how to calculate your screen size

Unlike screen resolutions, screen sizes are the actual physical sizes of your laptop or computer screen; they are measured in inches. To get the actual measurement of your screen size, you need a measuring tape or a ruler.

To better understand how the screen size of a monitor can be measured and calculated, here are a few steps that you can follow below:

Measure the width of the screen

For you to know your device’s screen size, the very first thing you need is to measure the width of the screen. To do that, all you need is to place your ruler or measure g tape across the horizontal length of the device’s screen. After that, note down the value. Here, I’ll assume that the width of my device’s screen is 20 inches.

Measure the height of the screen

Next, you need to measure the height of the device’s screen. To do that, all you need is to repeat the same process you used in the previous section for the width. The only thing changing, however, is that you’ll be calculating the vertical height of the screen (from top to bottom). In this case, I’ll assume that the height of my device’s screen is 14 inches.

Calculate the diagonal size using the Pythagorean theorem

Now that you’ve measured the width and height of your device’s screen, the next thing you need is to determine the screen size of the device. To do that, you need to make use of the Pythagorean theorem.

In case you don’t know, the simplest way to define the Pythagorean theorem is that; the sum of the squares on the length and width of a device’s screen is equal to the square on the diagonal size.

It’s pretty simple; to use the Pythagorean theorem to understand the screen size of your device, all you need is to use this formula; a2 + b2 = c2.

As for the alphabets above; a represents the width of the device screen, b represents the height, while c is the diagonal or screen size, which is what we’re after.

  • a2 equals the square of the width of the screen (that’s 20 multiplied by 20) to give 400.
  • b2 equals the square of the height of the screen (that’s 14 multiplied by 14) to give 196.

To calculate c, all you need is to add 400 to 196 and find the square root. For that, we have √(400+196), which is equal to 24.4 inches.

So, with our assumed width and height of 20 inches and 14 inches respectively, the screen size is 24.4 inches.

Here’s the screen size of 1440 x 900 resolution

Now that you know how to determine the screen size of a monitor, let’s get to the real business, which is to calculate the inches of 1440 x 900 resolution.

Note that 1440 x 900 resolution has its ma measurement in pixels. You can find the screen size directly using the Pythagorean theorem and later convert the pixels to inches. So, let’s get started with the calculation.

For a 1440 x 900 resolution, the width is 1440 and the height is 900. Using the Pythagorean theorem, all you need is to square these values, add them up, and find their square roots.

  • Square of 1440 is 2,072,600
  • Square of 900 is 810,000
  • Adding both (2,072,600 + 810,000), we have 2,883,600.
  • The square root of 2,883,600 is 1,698.11 pixels.

In case you don’t know, 1 inch is equivalent to 96 pixels. Since that’s the case, to convert 1,698.11 pixels to inches, all you need is to divide the figure by 96. Doing that, you’ll get 17.6 inches as the screen size of a 1440 x 900 screen resolution. That’s not up to 18 inches, so we conclude that the diagonal size of this resolution is 17.

The bottom line is that a 1440 x 900 screen resolution has a screen size of 17 inches.

What is 1440 x 900 screen resolution?

As earlier mentioned, the 1440 x 900 screen resolution is one of the widely used resolutions across the world. It has been around for quite some time, and according to StatCounter, the pixel was the fourth most popular screen resolution, as of December 2021. The screen resolution was utilized about 6.19%, globally.

Furthermore, you need to understand that the 1440 x 900 screen resolution is neither HD nor FHD. However, it’s closer to HD, which is 720p, than Full HD, which is 1080p.

What that means is that a 1440 x 900 resolution can always play full 720p videos, as long as it supports progressive scanning. However, the resolution will struggle to play Full HD (1080p) videos.

Another thing you need to understand about the 1440 x 900 resolution is that it has an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a screen size of 17 inches.

What resolutions have the same aspect ratio as 1440 x 900?

The aspect ratio can be defined as the relationship that exists between the width of a video image and its height. It’s usually calculated by finding the ratio of the width of a screen to its height.

Globally, the two most common aspect ratios are 4:3 and 16:9. Speaking of the 4:3 aspect ratio; it’s also known as fullscreen. As for the 16:9 aspect ratio, it’s known as widescreen.

The aspect ratio of 1440 x 900, as previously mentioned, is 16:10. This falls between fullscreen and widescreen, but pretty much closer to the latter.

Other screen resolutions that have 16:10 as their aspect ratios are 1280×800, 320×200, 1680×1050, 1920×1200, 2560×1600, 3840×2400, 5120×3200, and 7680×4800.
