What is the deal with new features not working? Why make new features if I can’t access them.

Is it really an upgrade if nothing works?

The answer is yes, you just need to be gentle. Windows 10 is a huge jump in software and features.

This means that whatever you’ve been using until now, might not play nice with all the new components.

One of these features is the two-finger scroll. The two-finger scroll becomes ingrained in your muscle memory that is very difficult to let go of.

So understandably, when you’re fingers naturally glide down the sensor pad with no response, you may feel a glitch with yourself.

The great thing about these fixes for Windows 10 is that because it’s compatible with all PCs — Asus, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, HP, etc. You learn one fix, you learn them all. You’re suddenly your friend group’s IT specialist.

Let’s get you qualified right now.

Method 1: Reinstall the Touchpad Driver

The driver is the center that liaises between the hardware and the software, oftentimes they have communication issues. By uninstalling, and reinstalling, they have a chance to reconnect and reconcile. Let’s mediate:

  1. Let’s use some shortcuts: Windows + X to open the menu and select Device Manager.
  2. Navigate to touchpad devices, right-click on your touchpad drivers and select Uninstall.
  3. Check the “Delete the driver software for this device” that will pop up. And hit that OK button.
  4. Once the uninstall is done, reboot.

Reinstall through the manufacturer’s website. If you’re not sure who the manufacturer is:

  1. Press the Windows key + Pause key.
  2. In the window that appears, select Device Manager.
  3. Click the arrow next to Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Your sound card is in the list that appears.

That’s it.

So go there, download their most recent driver, and run a test to see if the finger scroll is working. That just means, try and use your two fingers to scroll.

In the event that you still get no reaction, never fear! You might have to manually save the updated. And we can do that, too.

Method 3. Perform a hard reset

Two Finger Scroll Not Working
A hard reset is sort of like restoring to factory settings. But we like to think of it more like the memory loss machines from Men in Black, because although our technology changes, our references never get old.

So what we will do is erase everything, going so far back in the drivers’ memory that it has to learn how to be a driver again. But won’t you use all your data?

No, because the hard reset erases the memory from the driver’s operating system. This means that its functions are gone, but your data is safe.

Here is what you want to do:

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Remove it from any port replicator or docking station and all the other external devices like USB devices, printers, projectors (fun!) etc. This is where things get serious.
  3. Unplug the AC adapter and your PC battery.

Sidenote: If you don’t know how to unplug your PC battery:

Although every model varies slightly, with a PC you’ll probably just have a few screws in the back of the base of your laptop.

Once you’ve taken them out, locate the CMOS battery on the motherboard. It will be flat and probably circular, just under an inch across.

Once you’ve found it, slide your finger around the edge to coax it out. If there is a retaining clip, don’t move the clip, simply raise from the other side simultaneously.

Back to the original program:

  1. Press the Power button and hold for 15 seconds to drain the residual electrical charge.
  2. Reinsert the battery and plug the AC adapter back.
  3. Turn on your computer.
  4. Select Start Windows Normally in the startup menu, and then hit Enter.

The final step of them all: go back to scrolling on autopilot with two fingers. After all, your focus should be on the screen, not your hands!
